Structural Repairs Secures Seawall Restoration Project at Historic Bawdsey Manor
Structural Repairs (SRS) is proud to announce that we have been appointed as the principal contractor to deliver essential seawall restoration and sea defence repairs at Bawdsey Manor in Suffolk. The project, will ensure the long-term resilience of the site’s coastal defences, protecting both the manor’s grounds and the surrounding environment from ongoing coastal erosion and the power of the North Sea.
This significant appointment highlights our reputation as a trusted national specialist in structural repairs, coastal engineering and seawall restoration. With decades of experience, our teams deliver safe, innovative, and durable solutions to some of the UK’s most challenging structural and environmental projects.
Protecting a Landmark Site on the Suffolk Coast
Bawdsey Manor, near Woodbridge, is an estate of exceptional cultural and historical value. Originally the Victorian seat of Sir Cuthbert Quilter, it later became the birthplace of radar research during the Second World War, making it a site of national importance.
Today, Bawdsey Manor is operated by PGL (Parents Get Lost), a leading provider of educational activity holidays for schools and youth groups. Thousands of children visit each year to learn, explore, and enjoy outdoor adventures.
Its dramatic coastal setting, however, means that it faces severe risks from erosion, shifting sediments, and extreme weather. Without robust sea defences, the cliffs, heritage buildings and safe use of the site would be compromised. The new project will therefore play a vital role in protecting both the heritage and future use of Bawdsey Manor.
Scope of Seawall Restoration Works
The programme of works at Bawdsey Manor is extensive, requiring a blend of civil engineering, structural reinforcement, and coastal management. Key activities include:
- Installation of sheet piling and waling beams to strengthen the seawall structure.
- Concrete and grout treatments to secure foundations and prevent water ingress.
- Specialist welding and hot works to fix and prepare steel elements.
- Excavation and temporary propping to stabilise walls and prevent collapse during works.
- Traffic management and controlled deliveries of heavy plant, concrete, and steel.
All works will be carefully coordinated around tide times and weather forecasts, ensuring maximum safety and efficiency during this coastal construction project.
Health, Safety and Environmental Management
Safety is central to every project undertaken by Structural Repairs. A comprehensive Method Statement and Point of Work Risk Assessments (POWRAs) guide daily operations, ensuring compliance with all legal and contractual requirements.
Measures include:
- Daily tide and weather briefings to anticipate coastal changes.
- A strict Take 5 safety rule encouraging operatives to Stop, Think, Identify, Control and Complete before starting tasks.
- Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks for all SRS staff, given the presence of young people at the site.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety footwear, helmets, gloves, FFP3 masks, and life vests for those working near water.
- Environmental controls such as spill kits, noise and dust management, and responsible waste removal.
Structural Repairs also follows the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM Regulations 2015), ensuring full welfare facilities for all operatives on site, including toilets, rest areas, and safe equipment storage.
All machinery and lifting equipment will be maintained to the highest standards and used only by qualified, competent personnel. Regular inspections, three-monthly Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), and strict adherence to Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER Regulations) ensure full compliance and safe operation at all times.
Meeting Coastal Challenges Head-On
Coastal construction projects bring unique challenges. At Bawdsey Manor, SRS teams will contend with:
- Tidal movements and proximity to water
- Pulhamite cliffs at risk of collapse
- High winds, heavy rain, and strong UV exposure
- Restricted access within the PGL site, requiring careful safeguarding and traffic management
Thanks to our experience in coastal erosion protection and seawall strengthening, we are well prepared to deliver safe, reliable results under these demanding conditions.
Wider Benefits for the Community and Environment
The benefits of this project extend far beyond the construction works. By restoring the seawall, Structural Repairs is:
- Preserving the heritage of Bawdsey Manor, a nationally important site.
- Protecting the Suffolk coastline from further erosion.
- Enabling PGL to continue providing safe educational and adventure experiences to young people.
- Supporting sustainable coastal management for the long term.
As a company, Structural Repairs is committed to delivering projects that enhance both the built environment and the natural surroundings, leaving a lasting positive impact.
Project Outlook
The programme of works will follow a tight schedule, with activities planned in line with tidal cycles and seasonal weather patterns. Regular updates will be communicated to PGL, local residents, and stakeholders to ensure minimal disruption.
Commenting on the project, Roger Line at Structural Repairs, said:
“The Bawdsey Manor seawall restoration is both a challenging and rewarding scheme. Our team is committed to ensuring the highest levels of safety and quality while delivering lasting protection against coastal erosion. This project will safeguard an iconic heritage site for generations to come.”
