The Harland & Wolff dry docks in Belfast are a cornerstone of global maritime history. Famous worldwide as the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, and dominated today by the iconic yellow gantry cranes, Samson and Goliath, this colossal marine infrastructure was engineered to construct and maintain the largest vessels on earth.
However, operating in a relentless intertidal marine environment subjects concrete infrastructure to the most aggressive chemical and physical stresses imaginable. Over decades of constant exposure to saltwater, the structural concrete forming the massive dock walls had suffered severe, deep-seated degradation.
