What exactly does extreme heat do to structural concrete and masonry?

Extreme temperatures cause concrete to dehydrate and lose its compressive strength through a process called calcination. Furthermore the internal steel reinforcement expands under intense heat causing the surrounding concrete to crack and spall. The sudden application of cold water from high-pressure fire hoses also induces severe thermal shock which creates deep-seated fracturing across both concrete and historic masonry elements.

Can a fire-damaged heritage facade be saved if the interior is completely destroyed?

Yes. If our initial scanning confirms the front elevation retains sufficient foundational stability we can engineer a targeted preservation programme. We design and install heavy-duty emergency propping to secure the exterior frontage while the compromised interior is safely dismantled. Once the facade is isolated we utilise stainless steel crack stitching and deep-penetrating resins to consolidate the historic masonry.
