Another Successful RAAC Repair Project Completed for Network Rail

Concrete Remediation | Featured Structural Engineering Projects | RAAC Remediation

At Structural Repairs Ltd, we are proud to announce the successful completion of another critical RAAC repair project (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) , this time on essential infrastructure for Network Rail.

This project highlights our expertise in identifying, analysing and repairing RAAC defects using our proprietary
ReInforcer Mesh structural strengthening system – delivering permanent remediation with minimal disruption.

The Challenge: High-Risk RAAC Degradation

Maintaining the structural integrity of the national rail network is an uncompromising requirement. During a detailed structural assessment of a critical Network Rail asset, our engineers identified multiple severe defects within the existing RAAC planks.

Left unchecked, these defects posed a severe risk to the integrity of the infrastructure. The assessment revealed:

  • Extensive cracking and spalling on the soffits
  • Advanced stages of reinforcement corrosion
  • Significantly compromised load-bearing capacity

Given the location and the critical importance of the asset, a traditional rip-and-replace approach was unfeasible. The client required a rapid, highly accurate and permanent structural intervention that would not disrupt the active transport network.

Precision Diagnostics: Advanced Scanning and Defect Mapping

The Intervention: UK-Manufactured Re-Grid Technology

To rectify the defects without halting rail operations, we deployed the advanced ReInforcer Mesh solution – a bespoke, lightweight composite framework engineered specifically for RAAC remediation and strengthening.

Now manufactured entirely in the UK at our dedicated Doncaster hub, our composite solution an immediate and resilient structural upgrade. The key advantages of using this system for Network Rail included:

  • Restored Load Capacity: Adds immense tensile strength without the need for total plank replacement.
  • Minimal Added Mass: Exceptionally lightweight, making it the ideal intervention for overhead transport structures.
  • Rapid Deployment: Allows for fast installation with minimal operational disruption to the site.

Our photographic records show the the high-quality finish after ReInforcer Mesh strengthening. These visual outcomes reinforce the success of this project and demonstrate the capabilities of our solutions in real-world, safety-critical environments.

Beyond RAAC: The Future of Carbon Fibre Composited

The Result: Guaranteed Safety and Carbon Reduction

The rail intervention was an overwhelming success. All failing RAAC planks were fully remediated and the structure now meets the most rigorous safety and performance standards.

Crucially, by repairing rather than replacing the infrastructure, this project delivered significant environmental benefits. Avoiding heavy demolition and the installation of traditional steel frameworks drastically reduced the carbon footprint of the project, aligning perfectly with the public sector drive toward net-zero.

Secure Your Critical Infrastructure

Whether you are dealing with ageing RAAC panels or require an urgent structural assessment for critical infrastructure, our engineering teams provide safe, fast and fully certified solutions.
