What a week it that was! The team at Structural Repairs are just about coming back down to earth after an incredible few days at the National Civils Show at ExCeL London. It was truly fantastic to be part of such a vibrant gathering of the UK’s civil engineering community, surrounded by so much innovation, expertise and shared passion for the built environment.

The atmosphere at the ExCeL was electric. There is something quite special about getting so many industry professionals under one roof, from contractors and consultants to suppliers and policymakers. It was a unique opportunity to discuss the future of our infrastructure, share war stories from the site and look at the technologies that are shaping the next decade of construction.

One of the hottest topics on our stand last week—and indeed throughout the show—was the role of technology in maintenance. Specifically, we spent a lot of time discussing concrete scanning.

It was fascinating to hear how many engineers and asset managers are still relying on older, more invasive methods or incomplete data when making critical decisions about their structures. In 2024, relying on guesswork is simply not an option.

• Delamination: Separation of concrete layers that usually precedes spalling.
• Honeycombing: Areas where the concrete failed to fill the voids around the aggregate.
• Corrosion Risk: Early warning signs of rust on reinforcement bars before they expand and crack the surface.

This level of insight transforms how engineers approach maintenance. Instead of reacting to failures, they can predict them. It moves the dial from reactive firefighting to proactive asset management. With accurate data, you can prioritise repairs based on actual risk rather than just visual inspection.

We have seen cases where a timely intervention costing tens of thousands of pounds has prevented a failure that would have cost millions to rectify.
