That’s All Folks: Clarity, Safety and Savings: Reflections on the National Civils Show

Company News & PR

What a week it that was! The team at Structural Repairs are just about coming back down to earth after an incredible few days at the National Civils Show at ExCeL London. It was truly fantastic to be part of such a vibrant gathering of the UK’s civil engineering community, surrounded by so much innovation, expertise and shared passion for the built environment.

The atmosphere at the ExCeL was electric. There is something quite special about getting so many industry professionals under one roof, from contractors and consultants to suppliers and policymakers. It was a unique opportunity to discuss the future of our infrastructure, share war stories from the site and look at the technologies that are shaping the next decade of construction.

A Massive Thank You

First and foremost, we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who took the time to stop by the Structural Repairs stand. Whether you were an old friend of the business or a new face curious about what we do, it was a pleasure to meet you.

We had conversations that were insightful, challenging and genuinely inspiring. We spoke with:

  • Civil Engineers looking for more reliable data on their ageing assets.
  • Asset Managers trying to balance tight budgets with safety requirements.
  • Property Developers interested in the longevity of their concrete structures.

The energy was palpable and it reminds us exactly why we love this industry.

Missed Us in London? Let’s Connect

For those of you who could not make it down to the ExCeL last week, we missed you! We know how busy schedules can get and that taking time out for trade shows is not always possible when you have deadlines looming.

However, that does not mean you have to miss out on the conversation. We would love to hear from you and catch up on what you might have missed. We are always ready to discuss your projects and how we can support your structural maintenance needs.

The Clarity to Act: Why Concrete Scanning Matters

One of the hottest topics on our stand last week—and indeed throughout the show—was the role of technology in maintenance. Specifically, we spent a lot of time discussing concrete scanning.

It was fascinating to hear how many engineers and asset managers are still relying on older, more invasive methods or incomplete data when making critical decisions about their structures. In 2024, relying on guesswork is simply not an option.

Concrete scanning is not just about finding out where the rebar is before you drill a hole, although it is excellent for that too. It is about giving those managing substantial concrete structures real clarity to act.

What Modern Scanning Reveals Modern scanning technology, such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and 3D laser scanning, allows us to build a comprehensive picture of a structure’s internal health without lifting a breaker. By utilising these non-destructive testing methods, we can identify:

  • Hidden Voids: Empty spaces within the concrete that compromise structural integrity.
  • Delamination: Separation of concrete layers that usually precedes spalling.
  • Honeycombing: Areas where the concrete failed to fill the voids around the aggregate.
  • Corrosion Risk: Early warning signs of rust on reinforcement bars before they expand and crack the surface.

This level of insight transforms how engineers approach maintenance. Instead of reacting to failures, they can predict them. It moves the dial from reactive firefighting to proactive asset management. With accurate data, you can prioritise repairs based on actual risk rather than just visual inspection.

Saving Millions Through Strategic Structural Repairs

This brings us to the financial reality of our work. During the show, we spoke to asset managers who were facing spiralling costs due to deferred maintenance. It is a common story: a small issue is noted but pushed down the priority list until it suddenly becomes a critical failure requiring emergency intervention.

This is where the true value of structural repairs lies. It is not just about fixing a wall or patching a floor; it is about protecting the value of the asset itself. The potential for structural repairs to save clients millions is not an exaggeration.

The Financial Impact of Proactive Care When you utilise high-quality scanning and targeted repairs, you save money in three distinct ways:

  1. Avoiding Capital Expenditure: By extending the life of a structure by decades, you delay or remove the need for a total rebuild. Demolishing and rebuilding a car park or bridge costs exponentially more than maintaining it.
  2. Minimising Downtime: Emergency repairs often require facility closures. If a shopping centre car park or a toll bridge closes, revenue stops. Planned maintenance keeps the asset operational.
  3. Preventing Secondary Damage: A small crack lets in water. That water corrodes the steel. The steel expands and blows the concrete cover. Suddenly, a £500 crack injection job becomes a £50,000 concrete reinstatement job.

We have seen cases where a timely intervention costing tens of thousands of pounds has prevented a failure that would have cost millions to rectify. For those holding the purse strings, this provides a clear business case. Investing in diagnostic scanning and high-quality repairs is not an expense; it is a saving.

Looking Ahead: A Data-Driven Future

The National Civils Show highlighted that our industry is moving towards a smarter future. The days of ‘patch and pray’ are behind us. Today, it is about intelligence, precision and long-term strategy.

We are proud to be at the forefront of this shift, helping our clients navigate the complexities of managing ageing concrete infrastructure. The interest we saw in our scanning and repair services last week confirms that the industry is ready to embrace these technologies to build a safer, more sustainable built environment.

Next Steps

Once again, thank you to everyone who made the show such a success. We are excited to continue the conversations started in London.

If you have a project that could benefit from the clarity of concrete scanning or the security of specialist structural repairs, please do not hesitate to reach out. Let’s keep the dialogue going.
