Concrete services: Selby Flour Mill Concrete Assessment

Structural Repairs revolutionises foundation solutions with both screw piles and helical piles. This innovative approach triumphs in challenging sand and peat terrain, as demonstrated by two successful new builds. Discover how pile foundations outperform traditional methods, offering rapid installation, cost-effectiveness, and minimal environmental impact.
The Challenge

Structural Repairs faced a multifaceted task at Selby Flour Mill: delivering comprehensive concrete services while navigating logistical and environmental hurdles. The project demanded a delicate balance between thorough inspection and minimal operational disruption. Key obstacles included safely accessing the silo's full height, managing proximity to a major road, and contending with Yorkshire's unpredictable weather.

Our team needed to deploy sensitive equipment to detect internal voids, delamination, and insufficient concrete cover – all while working at considerable heights. The urgency of the situation, evidenced by concrete pieces falling at a mere touch, added pressure to deliver swift yet thorough assessment.

The ultimate challenge lay in translating our findings into an actionable plan, providing the client with a clear path forward for critical structural remediation.

The Solution:

To address the complex challenges at Selby Flour Mill, Structural Repairs implemented a comprehensive concrete assessment strategy. We deployed advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technology, specifically the Proceq PD 8050, an ultrasonic pulse echo device ideal for identifying internal voids and defects without damaging the structure.

To overcome access challenges, we utilized a Genie 135 MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform), allowing our skilled technicians to safely reach and scan the silo's entire concrete surface. We coordinated closely with Selby Council to arrange a road closure, ensuring safe operations near the major road.

Our team of two expert scan technicians systematically scanned the concrete face over two full days, operating efficiently despite the technical challenges of working at height. The scanning process allowed us to identify areas of concrete cover insufficiency, water ingress damage, and structural vulnerabilities.

This innovative approach combined cutting-edge technology with expert planning and execution, enabling us to provide a thorough assessment of the silo's condition without compromising safety or operational efficiency.

The Process:

The concrete assessment of Selby Flour Mill's silo was conducted over two full days. Using the Proceq PD 8050, an advanced ultrasonic pulse echo device, technicians scanned the entire concrete surface from a Genie 135 MEWP. Despite crosswinds up to 15 mph, the operation safely navigated the silo's height.

The PD 8050's sensitivity allowed for identification of internal voids, assessment of wall integrity, and documentation of areas with concrete cover insufficiency, water ingress damage, and severe degradation. This comprehensive scan formed the basis for detailed analysis and recommendations.

The carefully planned approach enabled efficient completion of this technically challenging task, demonstrating expertise in conducting precision assessments at height.

The Result:

Our comprehensive assessment of the Selby Flour Mill silo delivered critical insights and solutions. We created a detailed damage map, revealing extensive water ingress, severe delamination, and unstable concrete sections. This informed our customized repair strategy, including a fully costed scope of work for effective budgeting.

Despite the project's complexity, we delivered a comprehensive report within 10 days, enabling swift action. This project also inspired the development of a wall-climbing robot for future assessments, demonstrating our commitment to innovation in concrete services.

Our efficient, technology-driven approach not only addressed the immediate needs of Selby Flour Mill but also set a new standard for structural concrete assessments in challenging environments.
