Project Details:

Completion Date: 2022

Project Type: Concrete Repairs

Location: Shepperton, Surrey

The Problem:
The concrete bridge to the entrance of the Marina has suffered from concrete delamination over the years, and this needed to be addressed for safety reasons. The concrete bridge abutments, each side of the waterway entrance were finished originally in a decorative profile concrete pattern. This had suffered from concrete delamination over the years along with the underside of the bridge deck. Furthermore, there were cracks to the bridge surface.

The Solution:

Structural Repairs undertook a survey of the bridge and identified the areas that needed to be addressed and repaired. The work was carried out over a six week period. The bridge deck was scanned to identify any hidden defects and corroded reinforcement within the bridge deck.

Concrete scanning identifies and plots the reinforcement within the structure. The diameter of the reinforcement and the depth of concrete cover can also be determined. By using further half-cell scanning technology, the reinforcement can be scanned to see whether it is corroded within the concrete and even the speed of corrosion can be calculated.

The concrete was hacked off and removed to the defective areas. The reinforcement bar was exposed and carefully cleaned. These areas were then primed and a concrete repair was carefully undertaken maintaining the decorative profile to the bridge abutments.

Once the repairs had been completed, the bridge was coated with an anti-carbonation coating to protect the bridge against further deterioration. The bridge was then re-scanned, and an engineer reviewed the findings and calculated the current safe working load.

Preventative surveys identify potential issues that if addressed earlier minimise the costly repairs and reduce the environmental impact of major works having to be undertaken.
